This is the use of a confined space where individuals are exposed to heat, steam and medicinal herbs. It aims to promote the individual's wellbeing by stimulating profuse sweating and a profound experience that signifies detoxification

Caution


Individuals may suffer from:


  • Overexposure to heat


  • Smoke inhalation


  • Dehydration


  • Suffocation


  • Death



Avoid in: 


  • Epilepsy


  • Heart conditions


  • High blood pressure

  • Ancient practices of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas


  • The heat is generated by hot basalt stones doused with water and herbs


  • Ensure that the leading practitioner is competent in their ceremonial duties


  • There have been many recorded deaths with sweat lodge practices, often with those performed outside of the trained traditional circuit


  • Similar practices of covering an ailing individual in an enclosed steamed space exist in other cultures e.g. West Africa


  • It is very different from a sauna
