This is the placement of heated or cooled stones on the surface of the body to promote wellbeing. Flat basalt stones from riverbeds are usually used in combination with cold marble stones

Caution


Improper technique can cause serious side-effects:


  • Serious skin damages


  • Burns



Never use stones that have been heated in:


  • Open fires


  • Hot plates


  • Ovens


  • Microwave


  • Slow cookers



Avoid in:

 

  • Diabetes


  • Epilepsy


  • Skin disorders


  • Heart diseases


  • Skin damage


  • Varicose veins


  • History of blood clots


  • Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant therapy

  • Relaxation


  • Pain relief


  • Emotional wellbeing


  • Spiritual wellbeing


  • Good blood flow


  • Muscle pains


  • Sleep improvement


  • Fibromyalgia


  • Back pain



Comments
  • Practised since the ancient civilisations


  • A session may last up to 90 minutes


  • Stones are heated in hot water to between 40 and 60ºC (100 - 140 ºF)


  • They may also be chilled to between -5 and 25ºC (25 - 75ºF)


  • Oil is often massaged into the skin before stones are applied
