It is the injection of an irritant solution into a ligament, tendon or other soft tissue in order to stimulate healing. Natural irritants are injected with the aim of achieving pain relief, and to initiate body responses that promote repair of ligaments, tendons and joints

Caution


Side effects may include:


  • Pain at injection site


  • Bleeding


  • Nerve or tissue damage


  • Infection


  • Allergy to the injected agent




Avoid in:


  • Bleeding disorders


  • Blood thinning medications


  • Acute infections


  • Joint infections


  • Unexplained swellings


  • Recent fractures


Therapy for:
  • Low back pain


  • Joint problems


        -    Knees


        -    Shoulders


        -    Hips


        -    Heel


  • Tendon problems

Comments
  • A session may include up to 15 injections, and several sessions over many months (3 - 6) are often required


  • The irritants are usually natural products including dextrose or extracts of cod liver oil


  • There is no scientific backing for its effectiveness


  • Ancient Romans irritated gladiatorial wounds to stimulate healing
