Fad Diet

This is a diet regime that is popular for a particular time, without necessarily being one that meets the requirement for healthy eating. They usually promise to help with weight management, and to improve the wellbeing

Caution
  • Fad diets often do not meet the criteria for standard dietary recommendations


  • Some of them can be harmful to organs or to wellbeing


  • Many of the claims are unreasonable, exxagerrated and plainly against scientific reasoning


  • Fad diets can truly achieve impressive weight loss, however, the side-effects are often significant for the general wellbeing and immunity


  • Discuss with a dietician or other healthcare giver to ensure a balanced nutrition


Therapy for:
  • Ketogenic Diet


        -    Epileptics may experience less seizures



  • Mediterranean Diet: 


        -    Good for heart health


        -    Good for diabetic management 


        -    May be expensive



  • Caloric Restriction diet: 


        -    Requires a lot of discipline to stay hungry



  • Atkins diet: 


        -    May cause tiredness, dry mouth, bad breath and constipation 


        -    May increase the risk of heart disease



  • South Beach Diet: 


        -    May cause weakness 


        -    The first two weeks are usually very difficult to manage



  • Vegan Diet: 


        -    Likely to have mineral deficits like Vit D and Calcium 


        -    Add dairy alternatives to address the defficiencies



  • Paleo Diet: 


        -    May be too expensive for many 


        -    Low in Fiber and Calcium content



  • The Zone Diet: 


        -    May be expensive


        -    Often low on Fiber content



  • The Dukan Diet: 


        -    May cause fatigue, constipation and bad breath 



  • Alcorexia: 


        -    Unhealthy


        -    May lead to serious harm to organs and wellbeing



  • The Raw Food Diet: 


        -    Impractical, restrictive, nutrient defficient and risky to health



  • The Baby Food Diet: 


        -    Restrictive and expensive



  • The 5:2 Diet: 


        -    May lower the risk of obesity-related cancers 


        -    May cause dizziness, poor concentration and bad breath



  • Alkaline Diet: 


        -    May be low in calcium


        -    Seek diary alternatives to replace defficient minerals


Comments
  • There is no magic solution to losing weight


  • If you achieve rapid weight loss, there will be a side effect expressed in other areas of the body


  • Fad diets offer restrictive regimes with few food items or bizarre combination of foods


  • Although weight is lost, most people have a rebound where the weight is rapidly accumulated


  • When you follow a diet plan, learn its shortcomings and address them appropriately


  • Speak to a Nutrition therapist, Dietician or other healthcare giver about your dietary goals
