This is the practice of inserting needles into knots in muscles (trigger points) to relieve pain and improve their movement function. It is different from acupuncture although it uses similar needles

        -    Bleeding

        -    Pain

  • If performed on the chest, it may cause pneumothorax

  • Avoid on the tummy of pregnant individuals

  • Avoid on diseased or injured skin areas

  • Avoid on the jaw; it may injure the salivary glands

  • Avoid in the loin; it may injure the kidneys

Therapy for:
  • Muscle Pain

  • 'Knots' in muscles

  • Poor muscle function

Comments
  • Also called Myofascial Trigger Point Dry Needling or Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

  • Injection of anaesthetic into these 'knots' (myofascial trigger points) was a recognised treatment. It was suspected that injection without the drug also had a good effect, hence 'dry' needling was conceived
