Pregnancy: Use with caution


This is a form of heat therapy where dried mugwort plant is burned close to, or on the skin. The material burnt is called a 'moxa'. The aim is to stimulate the flow of energy through the body and thus promote health and wellbeing
Caution
The odour of the burning moxa is not particularly pleasant
The odour is similar to, and may be confused with that of marijuana
The process is quite smoky and may be uncomfortable for the lungs, causing:
- Sore throat
- Coughing
- Chest discomfort
May cause skin burns and scarring
In pregnant women, it can cause:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Contractions
- Distress to baby and premature birth
